Hi ,
The elections are just two days away. Voters in Scotland will be choosing their local MSPs and who runs Holyrood, people in Wales face a Senedd election and many across England will be voting for mayors and/or local councillors.
With the way geopolitics feeling chaotic and community needs ignored in national conversation, it can feel like change impossible and that there is no point. But your voice matters. Both in the lead up to Thursday and at the ballot box itself.
These elections will shape our communities for years to come; housing, libraries, social care, the services people rely on to live a safe and secure lives. These are the foundations for everyday wellbeing, One way to influence change is to get talking - to the people who knock on your door, your friends, your neighbours. We know from those of you who answered our poll last week that many of you are already doing this - 40% of you to be exact.
We need to be the countervailing force, demanding that equality remains on the agenda. We know because these decisions don’t just happen in a vacuum. Our research shows that they are shaped by concentrated wealth that rests in a few powerful hands. They happen in the small rooms where money buys access, and where "democracy" has a tendency to reflect the priorities of those with the deepest pockets. Fortunes build not so much by creating things, but by extracting from land, from labour, from the public goods we all contribute to.
Because David beat Goliath, because a colony of ants can build a whole new construction from working together. We can do that same.
Election times provide good opportunities to get your issues in front of local canvassers and push for answers that matter to you and your communities. Our recent updated blog provides tips to help you make the most of this opportunity; from door conversations to attending a hasting or calling in to your local radio station. Get some ideas.
So vote. Ask questions. Expect answers. Because while money may speak loudly, it doesn’t come with a ballot paper. |
