Hi ,
During the Autumn budget last year; Labour's first after taking power, the government claimed that due to the books being unexpectedly short this time, they'd need to make some austerity cuts. There was a lot they wanted to do but couldn't, they said, due to the financial situation – but by being strict this one time and cutting Winter Fuel Allowance, leaving promised green projects unfunded, and allowing child poverty to rise, growth would surely follow.
In the Spring statement a month ago, the government claimed that due to the books being unexpectedly short this time, they'd need to make some austerity cuts. People with disabilities and chronic illnesses would need to deal with huge cuts to their support, but by being strict this one time, growth would surely follow.
Anyway, today the Office for National Statistics warned that the books are unexpectedly short and the government will need to make some austerity cuts, apparently. Who could have foreseen.
The UK is trapped in an inequality cycle. The wealthy and powerful are enjoying unprecedented profits and using them to exert massive influence over policy across the UK, widening their advantage each day. That's why we're building a plan to break out of the cycle.
Yesterday, we joined our allies in the General Federation of Trade Unions and MPs from across parliament to deliver our demand to Make Equality Real to 10 Downing Street. Signed by thousands of you, it's a call to commence the socio-economic duty in a way that includes trade unionists, experts, and people with lived experience of inequality. If it's commenced in the fairest way, it could be used to interrupt the next programme of austerity cuts.
