Writing in the Guardian today, Professors Kate Pickett and Richard Wilkinson say that since they published The Spirit Level in 2009, inequality has got worse.

In their new research updating and expanding the original data from The Spirit Level, Pickett and Wilkinson show just how pervasive the global effects of inequality are. They've demonstrated new links between inequality and environmental damage, the rise of the far right, and more social damage than anyone in our political system has been willing to admit.

Publishing this new data in our report The Spirit Level at 15, they say, is an invitation for the new government to act. Politicians have years of data, public support, and a clear opportunity to start making this country more equal. Now we need to come together to demand they act on it.

• "Yes! I do think PR is fairer, and in an ideal world everyone should have their view represented in Parliament but a hung Parliament means it's much harder to get things done, so this time I'm glad that FPTP had the outcome it did."

• "[My MP] is a well known and well liked LibDem who has worked hard for many years to get rid of a Tory, but the national result is an insult to democracy in its almost total unfairness regarding a complete unmatch between overall votes cast nationally for a particular party and the seats awarded to that party, with Labour getting an obscene anti-democratic 63% of the seats with only 34% of the votes."
  
  

• "I am happy that a Labor MP won in my area, but I am disappointed that he would not commit to PR. In fact, I couldn't vote for him because of that.

  Under PR I would be upset to see so many reform MPs, but in balance I still would have preferred PR. PR would still have produced a progressive majority, but it would have been more diverse. To paraphrase an entrepreneur, if we want to find the best ideas, we need to hear more ideas from more people."
