This Thursday, it seems that an era may well end. This election could be the first for 14 years that produces a different government at Westminster.

I think we can all agree the last 14 years haven't felt like they put us on the road to a more equal country. Our crisis of inequality has caused a lot of damage and prevented us taking action on other crises, from the climate to housing.

But regardless of who wins the next election, thanks to you and many other campaigns over the last decade, many of the things we need seem more possible than ever. Wealth taxes, investment in people, public ownership, meaningful democracy and more are all popular demands, and we intend to make those demands louder over the next five years.

The Spirit level at 15 launch monday 22 july 2024 the equality trust
A decade and a half ago, The Spirit Level revolutionised the way we looked at, measured and understood the impacts of inequality. 
 

Now 15 years on, we are publishing The Spirit Level at 15, which offers new research and conclusions from the original authors and co-founders of The Equality Trust, Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett.

Its message is a wake-up call to government and essential decision-makers who need to act quickly and reverse decades of rising inequalities of income, wealth and power to protect our planet and ensure everyone can live a good life.

The launch event will be held online on Monday 22 July between 6.00pm and 7.30pm  and is free to attend. We will be joined by Kate and Richard, along with Equality Trust staff who will be discussing the enduring impact of inequality and offering some solutions in practice fit for the next stage in the journey.

NEF: The foundations of the housing crisis

The housing crisis is one of the UK's favourite enduring structural problems, as well as a example of inequality's role in our problems: it's caused by inequality, contributes to inequality, and unequally impacts our communities. The New Economics Foundation's new paper on it argues exactly this, and says we need a new model that doesn't enrich very few while hurting the rest of us.
