Inequality is so all-pervasive in the UK that it can sometimes be difficult to talk about; where do you even start? That's why we've created a new guide for talking about equality during this election.
While the party manifestos are out, we still have a lot of room to shape how candidates and parties see the urgent problems the next government needs to fix. Hustings, call-in shows, and papers all over the country are talking about the next government's priorities. Our new guide has key questions for every candidate, advice on getting on the radio, tips for hustings questions and more - now, we just need you to start asking difficult questions about inequality!
Imagine if someone was able to ask him about wealth taxes, kicking corporations out of politics, or oil and gas profiteering. Well, it could be you! Submit a question on the inequality crisis now.
We hope this guide helps you email candidates, write to papers, and ask questions of everyone asking for your vote.
What would your top priority in any manifesto be? You said:
"A definite strategy and blueprint for action, with immediate initiation and long-term planning, in order to confront the climate crisis. Action, not promises and interminable debates."
"That they would actually mean anything! As soon as who ever wins the election the manifesto goes out of the window!"
"Recognition that to improve overall welfare and any form of 'levelling up' requires a reduction in the wealth of those with the most."
"Equalling up"
"There are so many issues that need attention, but underlying everything, especially equality and the difficult decisions facing us on climate change, is the imperative for Proportional Representation."
Peoples Voice Media, the charity that launched the Community Reporting methodology and network that has guided a lot of our recent work, is looking for trustees. They're particularly interested in recruiting people already involved in Community Reporting. If you're interested in finding out more, you can join a Meet the Team meeting on the 16th or 23rd of July. Email Hayley for an invite.
Our friends at PositiveMoney have launched a petition calling on the party leaders to 1) ban second jobs, 2) cap political donations, and 3) slow the revolving door between politics and lobbying. These things would make it a lot more difficult for the wealthy and powerful to rig the system in their favour; we think every political party should be able to sign up to these!
